Hello future women of Wellesley!
This is my first blog ever and I¡¯d like to use my post to reflect upon reasons why I am glad to have selectedWellesley¡
As a UWC scholar from Hong Kong, I enjoy traveling, meeting new people and volunteering away from home. I believe that the farther from home I was, the more likely it would be that I¡¯d encounter something different, something that would shake me, and make me uncomfortable in the best way that teaches me how to adapt to and then appreciate difference. It¡¯s been 3 years at Wellesley and even though I love every aspect of experiences I have had at Wellesley,
I still haven¡¯t adapted to some things:
1. The cold New England weather
2. The inability to find a caf¨¦ that is open 24 hours
But there are some other, quite amazing, things that I really appreciate:
1. Amazing professors. Throughout my Wellesley experience, I have met some very understanding, kind, and dedicated professors who extend office hours around student schedules to ensure that everyone understands class material, as well as some professors that invite us to their houses for dinner and share their personal experiences with us. I am surrounded by faculty and staff who are very different from me in terms of gender, age, culture, beliefs, upbringing, academic interests, personal goals etc¡ but who, in under three years, helped me mature, shape my character and reassess my goals for the future. Also, don¡¯t be surprised when the professor knows your name before you attend your first class. Wellesley Professors try.
2. A beautiful campus. I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of living in a beautiful campus. Even when the trees are barren and not enough snow has fallen to cover up the winter¡¯s killing of everything lively, Wellesley¡¯s campus has a sort of frozen grandeur to it that never fails to impress. But the spring is simply breathtaking - I have no idea how much money goes into maintaining the grounds at this time, but it¡¯s got to be a lot and I think it¡¯s worth every penny!
3. Study/Work abroad opportunities. A lot of Wellesley students go study abroad in their junior years. I did not get to study abroad, but I received a Global Engagement Fellowship from the Center for Work and Service at Wellesley in my sophomore year, which allowed me to work in Shanghai, China over the summer.
4. The World¡¯s Most Powerful Women¡¯s Network. The Wellesley network extends beyond my 4-year experience at Wellesley, it really is a life-time experience. When I was in Shanghai, China for my internship, the Wellesley Alumna Club took the initiation to contact me even prior my arrival. The Wellesley connection is so powerful across the world that I never felt alone when I was in Shanghai. The alumnae took me around the city, introduced me to other alumnae and gave me advice on career. I still keep in contact with all of them. It is always good to know there is a community of smart, trusty-worthy women and women with good values that I respect and belong to.
